Zealandia and the Botanic gardens were great for an outdoor experience. Indoors, the tour of the Beehive and Parliamentary buildings was excellent, as was the Te Papa Museum. Some good restaurants around, but can take a while to find.

We experienced perfect weather from Thursday to Sunday in mid-May. We arrived on a Thursday afternoon, and we had a brief demonstration of horizontal rain (I can now say I experienced it :D). The rest of the time, we had a bright blue sky and crisp temperatures—perfect!
The city is lovely and very walkable. We went to the tourist information centre, and the person who helped us was lovely. The cable car is maybe a bit underwhelming (you only need to do it once to say that you have done it), but the botanic garden and its surroundings are worth the trip.
As a Melbournian, I wanted to see if Wellington's coffee is as good as Melbourne's. He listed some of the top coffee places and explained the difference between the types of coffee served at each location.
The locals are so friendly and helpful. People often stopped and helped us when we were staring out our phones to orient ourselves.
As vegans, finding good food and a few excellent, fully plant-based restaurants was very easy.

We stayed at the Apollo which was an easy walk into town.
We stayed at the Apollo which was an easy walk into town. Buses to areas out of the city seemed pretty regular. Wellington is a pretty switched on city, with a creative energy and plenty of things to enjoy. Cuba St which is pedestrians only has plenty of cafes and restaurants and the food is top notch. Our favourites for dinner were Loretta’s, Olive, Mr Go’s. Icecream and Creaming sodas at Duck Island, coffees at Pickle and Pie, Cheese Scones beautiful pastries and coffee at Myrtle’s. Some good clothing shops, also recycling shops where there was really good clothing for sale at low prices, good bookstores. A must visit is Te Papa Museum - Level 4 Māori and Pacific Island history is impressive. The museum’s shop is also worth checking out. The lobby of QT Hotel (there’s a golden hippo on the hotel’s exterior) - you don’t need to be a guest to wander in to view the lobby area which includes a magnificent private art collection and a ritzy bar. Plenty of bars with music and Sunday Farmers Market on the waterfront was bustling with plenty of fruit and vegetables along with brunch food and coffee available.

I enjoyed how close everything was to the hotel and how easy it was to walk to the places I wanted to see. The waterfront was nearby too. I did go by uber to Zealandia which was amazing and is a great place to visit.
I think this hotel is Wellington' best kept secret for central city for budget travellers, rooms had all facilities with tv, fridge , tea and coffee making jug, and bed was comfortable, room was light and airy - ok a little traffic noise in the morning but to be expected in central city.
The staff warm and friendly, the inclusive fully cooked breakfast was excellent, and highly commend the young Thai man in the restaurant was friendly, efficient and helpful.
Central location and easy walk to downtown shopping and waterfront attractions.
I have stayed at the hotel before. The number and quality of artworks provide a significant 'point of difference' for my husband and me when selecting somewhere to stay in Wellington. We love the gallery ambience - the array of contemporary New Zealand art is deeply pleasurable - a feeling that one never tires of! There are delights around every corner. We hope that this never changes. We are prepared to pay for the pleasure! We will be recommending the hotel to all of our friends who also love art and culture.
Overall the Shepards Arms Hotel was excellent. Location was excellent, centrally located, easy access to the motorway, public transport and all the other Wellington hotspots. Staff are super friendly and really accommodating. The food on offer is yummy too. For an establishment close to the CBD another bonus is that there is free parking onsite but it does pay to arrive early or you may miss out. Highly recommend to other travellers, this is very good value for money.
An oasis in the city - a little away from the main CBD but central enough to walk or catch a cheap uber. Has a couple of eatng places handy. The reception desk was very helpful. Has car parking which is a bonus. This was a brilliant place to stay the apartment had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. My husband loved watching the trains, planes and ships coming and going. Can recommend.
Was quiet but did stay Sunday & Monday nights. Very comfortable bed. Nice clean room. Extra tea / coffee etc. items required no problem for staff to supply. Great location to central city shopping and food outlets. Grateful to Manager for compensating me with free breakfast for an issue which inconvenienced me which was NOT the Hotels fault plus a TV cable fault, much appreciated 👍
Two very comfy double beds in the decent sized room. Pillow menu available !
Decent sized shower with plenty of hot water and a nice high pressure.
Room was warm
Could hear some traffic noise but have had worse at other hotels in Wellington.
Central city location was brilliant.
Thunderbird Cafe directly across the road from the hotel entrance do great brunches & coffee.
The attention to detail was very apparent, from the fixtures to the artwork to the amenities provided. We were very impressed. Though there was no front desk, we found that it was not really needed as any questions were answered immediately via phone or email. Very clear instructions as to how to gain entrance to the hotel & the room. Wonderfully, comfy bed and great shower!
I booked this at the last minute, as I wanted a hotel in the centre of the city. It was perfectly located and the staff were very diligent and helpful. The terrace room I booked was tired and certainly in need of renovation, but the bed was comfy and I slept well, despite it overlooking the road and the exit from the motorway.
Excellent location, clean facilties, staff (especially Kiera at the reception) was really friendly and helpful. Given the convenience of parking space right in front of the hotel and Wellington CBD "convenience" for parking, price/performance-wise (after checking hours and hours), I can easily say one of the best options!
The location was excellent being close to the railway station and downtown. It was also close to the Parliament buildings where we did a really interesting tour. Wellington is a very walkable city and this hotel seemed to be handy to everything. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We would stay here again.
Great location for central wellington businesses. I also think that the City Life beds are one of the most comfortable in the hotels I have stayed at. Room was a great size. Friendly and helpful staff who were happy to sort a few things for me.
Second visit, so I knew exactly what I was booking
Rooms are well designed, comfortable, quiet, everything you need in them
Access to city is easy
Staff are friendly, its a modern design with all i need, it's my new go-to Wellington CBD hotel
Staff/Receptionist very friendly, entire complex was very clean, facilities easy access, The Dwellington had everything Sauna, tennis court, bbq area, kitchen wih all provisions, close to transport and in the city ...awesome place to stay!!!
The location was perfect. Walking distance to city/marina and lots of restaurants and cafes nearby. We were surprised how cheap it was to get there from airport ($25 Uber). The staff were lovely too! We will book here again next time.
The hotel has great character, the staff are super friendly. Our room was clean and had everything we needed. The location is perfect and walking distance to all the Wellington CBD areas. We would definitely stay here again.
Very central walk the city car park for car got rid of the rental car a free bus to airport for oldies yes I will pick this as first choice to stay in Wellington
